Common Questions About The Bible
what happens when a believer dies?
I believe that when the Old Testament saints encountered death, their souls were not taken directly to heaven, as is now the case with New Testament believers.
Instead, the Old Testament believers were taken to a place called paradise (Luke 23:43, 1 Corinthians 12:3-4, or Abraham’s bosom (Luke 16:3-23).
Then, upon the event of Christ’s crucifixion and resurrection, these Old Testament saints were resurrected (Matthew 27:3-53).
Today, now that Christ’s resurrection has already occurred, when Christians die, we are taken directly to heaven. The strongest argument I find for this is 2 Corinthians 5:1-8 (NLT), which says,
New Bodies
For we know that when this earthly tent we live in is taken down (that is, when we die and leave this earthly body), we will have a house in heaven, an eternal body made for us by God himself and not by human hands.
We grow weary in our present bodies, and we long to put on our heavenly bodies like new clothing.
For we will put on heavenly bodies; we will not be spirits without bodies.
While we live in these earthly bodies, we groan and sigh, but it’s not that we want to die and get rid of these bodies that clothe us. Rather, we want to put on our new bodies so that these dying bodies will be swallowed up by life.
God himself has prepared us for this, and as a guarantee he has given us his Holy Spirit.
So we are always confident, even though we know that as long as we live in these bodies we are not at home with the Lord.
For we live by believing and not by seeing.
Yes, we are fully confident, and we would rather be away from these earthly bodies, for then we will be at home with the Lord.
How Do I Get to Heaven? and Why Do I Need Jesus
The Bible contains some bad news from God for every person born into the human race. First, the Bible declares that everyone is a sinner. God says,
For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God. (Romans 3:23)
This means that everyone has broken God’s moral laws which prohibit things such as lying, stealing, adultery, coveting, murder, and so forth. Some people have broken the moral code less than others, but all have violated it are guilty and are doomed to hell. No one matches up to what the Bible calls the ‘glory of God’, which is His moral perfection. This quality is necessary for entrance into Heaven. No matter how good one acts or how hard one tries, he can never rise to God’s standard of absolute righteousness. Therefore, he is excluded from Heaven.
The second piece of bad news from God, revealed in the Bible, is that the penalty for sin is death. God says,
For the wages of sin is death. (Romans 6:23).
Because everyone has sinned, all have earned death, which is conscious suffering of eternal separation from God in hell. There is absolutely nothing a person can do to remove this divine penalty of death.
The Bible, however, contains some very good news from God to morally guilty sinners. First, the Bible says that Jesus Christ died in the sinner’s place.
But God demonstrates His own love towards us, in that while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us (Romans 5:8).
Since we as guilty sinners could do nothing to pay for our moral guilt, God Himself paid the penalty of death for us through the sacrifice of His Son, the sinless God-man Jesus Christ. This sacrifice completely satisfied God’s justice, which demands the punishment of death for our sins. It is as if a healthy person took into his body the terminal disease of another so that the sick person would live, while the healthy person died in his place. In the same way, the sinless Jesus Christ took on Himself our cancer of sin and suffered death on the cross as our substitute. He died in our place. After paying the penalty of death for our sins, Jesus Christ arose from the dead because He had no moral guilt of His own. Since God’s justice against us was satisfied, death could no longer hold Jesus in the tomb. Now, that’s good news!
The second piece of good news from God in the Bible is that everyone can now receive eternal life in Heaven as a gift from God by trusting in Jesus Christ as one’s personal savior. The Bible says,
For by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God, not of works, lest anyone should boast. Ephesians 2:8-9 (NKJV)
Salvation comes only through faith in Jesus Christ.
For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whosoever believes in Him should not perish, but have eternal life (John 3:16 NKJV).
All human sin has been paid for by God’s Son, Jesus Christ, on the cross. Because of this, God the Father can give eternal life in Heaven as a no-strings-attached, free gift to anyone who will receive it by faith in His Son. Faith means to trust in Jesus Christ alone to save one from hell. Faith means to believe what God has said about being received into Heaven through His Son, Jesus Christ, who has paid for all our sins.
How Can I Be Save?
Romans 10:9 (NKJV)
that if you confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus and believe in your heart that God has raised Him from the dead, you will be saved.
Romans 10:10 (NKJV)
For with the heart one believes unto righteousness, and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation.
Romans 10:11 (NKJV)
For the Scripture says, “Whoever believes on Him will not be put to shame.”
Romans 10:12 (NKJV)
For there is no distinction between Jew and Greek, for the same Lord over all is rich to all who call upon Him.
Romans 10:13 (NKJV)
For “whoever calls on the name of the LORD shall be saved.”
Who is the author of the Bible?
II Timothy 3:16
“All Scripture is given by inspiration of God….”
The word “Scripture” in the above passage is another name for the book that today we call Bible. In other words, the name that the book that we are speaking about gives to itself is “Scripture”. The name “Bible” is of later origin. As long as it is clear that Scripture and Bible are synonyms, we can use both of these terms interchangeably.
Thus what the above verse tells us is that all the Bible was given by inspiration of God. The phrase “by inspiration of God” is actually one word in the Greek text, the word “theopneustos”. This word is composed by the word “theos” that means God and the word “pneustos” that means breathed. Therefore, when the Bible says that it is “theopneustos” what it means is that it is “God-breathed” which in turn means that it came out of the breath of God and consequently it is God’s product. Hence: Author of the Bible is God who breathed it or produced it.
What's the difference between the Old Covenant and New Covenant ?
The old covenant was between God and man. It was about what man did, first.
- And it shall come to pass, if thou shalt hearken diligently unto the voice of the Lord thy God, to observe and to do all his commandments which I command thee this day, that the Lord thy God will set thee on high above all nations of the earth: And all these blessings shall come on thee, and overtake thee, if thou shalt hearken unto the voice of the Lord thy God. Blessed shalt thou be in the city, and blessed shalt thou be in the field…But it shall come to pass, if thou wilt not hearken unto the voice of the Lord thy God, to observe to do all his commandments and his statutes which I command thee this day; that all these curses shall come upon thee, and overtake thee (Deuteronomy 28:1-3, 15).
- This shows us the rules of the old contract between God and man.
- “If thou” is always about our performance.
- For whosoever shall keep the whole law, and yet offend in one point, he is guilty of all (James 2:10).
- Under the law, the people had to keep more than six hundred requirements. Breaking even one meant God had to withhold His blessings and instead dispense the curses.
- Christ hath redeemed us from the curse of the law, being made a curse for us: for it is written, Cursed is every one that hangeth on a tree (Galatians 3:13).
- Under the law, God punished the people for their wrongdoing. This is no longer true under the covenant of grace; Jesus took away the curse.
The new covenant is between God and Jesus. It is about what Jesus already did.
There were two ministries operating in the books of Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John. One of them was Jesus fulfilling all of the law, because no one else could; the second was Jesus giving the people a preview of the new covenant that was to come.
We must be careful when we read the direct words that Jesus spoke. Much of the time, He was talking specifically to people who were under the law.
And, behold, one came and said unto him, Good Master, what good thing shall I do, that I may have eternal life? And he said unto him, Why callest thou me good? there is none good but one, that is, God: but if thou wilt enter into life, keep the commandments (Matthew 19:16, 17).
And brought them out, and said, Sirs, what must I do to be saved? And they said, Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and thou shalt be saved, and thy house (Acts 16:30, 31).
And when ye stand praying, forgive, if ye have ought against any: that your Father also which is in heaven may forgive you your trespasses. But if ye do not forgive, neither will your Father which is in heaven forgive your trespasses(Mark 11:25, 26).
For if ye forgive men their trespasses, your heavenly Father will also forgive you: But if ye forgive not men their trespasses, neither will your Father forgive your trespasses (Matthew 6:14, 15).
And be ye kind one to another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, even as God for Christ’s sake hath forgiven you (Ephesians 4:32).
Forbearing one another, and forgiving one another, if any man have a quarrel against any: even as Christ forgave you, so also do ye (Colossians 3:13).
Think not that I am come to destroy the law, or the prophets: I am not come to destroy, but to fulfil. For verily I say unto you, Till heaven and earth pass, one jot or one tittle shall in no wise pass from the law, till all be fulfilled (Matthew 5:17, 18).
The requirements for salvation under the covenant of the law changed when the covenant of grace was established.
Before Jesus’ death, God’s forgiveness was conditional. It hinged on man’s forgiveness, first. After His death, forgiveness is now offered to us first, as a gift.
Who Benefits From The Covenant of Grace?
We are the beneficiaries of the covenant of grace. We receive the benefits by faith.
1.) Under the law, mankind had to work to love God. Under grace, we are empowered to love because of what Jesus did.
a. And thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind, and with all thy strength: this is the first commandment. And the second is like, namely this, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself. There is none other commandment greater than these(Mark 12:30, 31).
b. We love him, because he first loved us (1 John 4:19).
2.) For I will be merciful to their unrighteousness, and their sins and their iniquities will I remember no more (Hebrews 8:12).
a. We can say that we love God, but it is important for us to believe that He loves us, even when we do not do right.
b. Mercy is when we do not receive the bad that we deserve.
3.) Knowing this, that the law is not made for a righteous man, but for the lawless and disobedient, for the ungodly and for sinners, for unholy and profane, for murderers of fathers and murderers of mothers, for manslayers, For whoremongers, for them that defile themselves with mankind, for menstealers, for liars, for perjured persons, and if there be any other thing that is contrary to sound doctrine (1 Timothy 1:9, 10).
a. The law is no longer valid for those people who have been born again and are the righteousness of God. It is only valid for people who have not come to the end of themselves.
